Delta Air Lines (DAL) is an airline company based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Delta Air Lines operates a wide domestic and international network including the North America, Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. The company flies to over 332 worldwide destinations in 57 countries (not including codeshare), across 5 continents. Delta Air Lines is the only major U.S. company which flies to Africa. On April 14, 2008, Northwest Airlines announced it would be merging with Delta Air Lines to form the new Delta Air Lines. The "new" Delta would become the world's largest carrier.
The company offers service to more destinations than any other airline with carrier service to 311 destinations in 52 countries. With more than 60 new international routes added in the year 2007, Delta Air Lines is adding international flights at a faster rate than other U.S. airlines and is a leader across the Atlantic ocean with flights to 32 trans-Atlantic flights. Delta offers more than 600 weekly flights to 58 destinations to Latin America and the Caribbean. Delta's alliances also allow customers to earn and redeem SkyMiles on nearly 15,000 flights offered by SkyTeam® alliance network. The company is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights, and services. Including its SkyTeam alliance and with worldwide codeshare partners, the company offers flights to 462 destinations in 98 countries. The airline is subject to government regulation under the Federal Aviation Act ( 1958 ).
Delta Air Lines operates hubs at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Salt Lake City International Airport, and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Delta Air Lines' Atlanta hub is the largest airline hub in the world. The airline maintains a secondary hub at Los Angeles International Airport and has key city operations in many other cities: Cancun, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, New York-LaGuardia and Tampa. The company is the major carrier in Florida, and carries more passengers across the Atlantic ocean than any other world carrier. Company's primary transatlantic gateways are Atlanta, New York-JFK and Cincinnati. Transatlantic service also started from Salt Lake City to Paris in 2008. Company's primary Latin American hubs are Atlanta and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles hub was reduced in 2008, ending the build up as Delta went from a high of 48 destinations from the airport to 34. Most of the Latin American flights were cancelled at LAX in 2008, going from 17 destinations to 9. Delta Air Lines continues to use Los Angeles hub (LAX) as a small hub with just under 75 flights a day. In terms of passengers carried Delta Air Lines is the second-largest airline in the world (behind only American Airlines). In terms of revenue passenger miles the company is the third largest airline in the wirld, after American Airlines and United Airlines. The airline serves more destinations than any other airline worldwide. Delta Air Lines is the sixth-largest airline in the world in terms of total operating revenues. Delta Air Lines announced a long-speculated deal to acquire Northwest Airlines for about $3.1 billion on On April 14, 2008. This will create the new world's largest airline and could lead to a series of other deals to reshape the U.S. airline service market. The new airline will operate under the name Delta Air Lines, and will be based in Atlanta. Delta will maintain the nine hubs of the both airlines in the United States, Europe and Asia, will serve more than 390 destinations in 67 countries. The new airline will have an annual revenue of $35 billion, operate more than 800 airplanes and employ more than 75,000 employees.
