Malev Hungarian Airlines flies to destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The airline also maintains several charter destinations. Services on the Budapest-Toronto and Budapest-New York JFK flights were suspended in mid-November 2007 and were resumed in March 2008. Passenger loads are lower in winter on these routes, making them uneconomical to operate. Oneworld alliance partners Malev and American Airlines will codeshare on 15 flights departing from New York JFK. Flights to Toronto will operate on a 5x week frequency with the first departure on the end of May.

Malev Hungarian Airlines official founding date was March 29, 1946, when the Hungarian-Soviet Civil Air Transport Joint Stock Company was started. The fleet consisted of 21-seat Li-2 passenger aircraft and 3-seat Po-2 "taxis". In 1950, Malev's operating base moved from Budaörs to the newly opened airport at Ferihegy, where it has remained. In 1956, Hungary purchased all the Soviet shares of Maszovlet, and Malev was born. In 1968 the company purchased jet-propelled Tupolev Tu-134s from the Soviet Union, and provided service to Europe and the Middle East. The first western Boeing 737-200 was purchased on November 18, 1988. The last Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-154 plane was retired from service in 2001. In 2003, the company starded replacing its Boeing 737 aircraft with 737 newer planes. The company now owns a fleet of 18 Boeing 737s and 1 Boeing 767-300ER for long-haul flights, Fokker 70s and Canadair CRJ-200s for regional routes. The Hungarian state property agency ÁPV Rt. owned 99.5% of Malev shares from 1999 to 2007. The resting 0.5% are owned by small shareholders. ÁPV Rt has tried to privatise Malev - and finally sold it to AirBridge Zrt. AirBridge company purchased 99.9% of shares in February 2007. Despite Malev's codeshare agreements with several SkyTeam carriers, Malev airline chose to join Oneworld alliance as a full member. Malev became a full member of Oneworld on March 29, 2007.
